What this scheme actually is
iDEX is the most commercially serious government programme on this list, because the grant is not the prize — the procurement order is. The armed forces and defence PSUs publish problem statements; startups compete to solve them; winners get grant funding, a Partner Incubator, user trials with the actual service, and a defined path to a defence contract. That last element is what no private investor can offer.
Implementing agency: Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO)

How to apply, step by step
- 1
Track the challenge cycles
iDEX runs on published Defence India Startup Challenges. Watch idex.gov.in/challenges — problem statements are specific, and a general defence-tech pitch outside a challenge goes nowhere.
- 2
Pick a problem statement you can actually deliver
Each statement carries technical specifications set by a service or DPSU. Assess honestly whether your team can hit the spec inside the timeline before committing.
- 3
Prepare the technical and commercial proposal
Technical approach against the spec, development plan, milestones, team credentials and costing. Grant covers a share of the product development budget; show how you fund the rest.
- 4
Clear evaluation and pitch
Screening, then a pitch to an evaluation committee including service representatives. They know the domain — over-claiming is quickly exposed.
- 5
Build with your Partner Incubator and go to user trials
Winners are attached to a Partner Incubator, build against milestones, and go into trials with the end user. Trials are where the procurement conversation actually begins.

Services this usually needs
No consultant can guarantee a sanction — that decision sits with the evaluating committee, bank or incubator. We commit to an honest eligibility view, an application built to the evaluator’s format, filing inside the window and a documented follow-up cadence. That is stated in every engagement letter we sign.
