What is a Producer Company?
A Producer Company is a legally recognized corporate entity under Part IXA of the Companies Act 2013 designed specifically for farmers, fishermen, artisans and other primary producers. It combines the features of a cooperative society with the corporate governance of a private limited company — giving producers collective market power without the complexities of cooperative law.
Unlike regular companies, a Producer Company can only accept producers as members and must primarily engage in activities related to primary produce — from farming and fishing to weaving and dairy. It is the preferred vehicle for Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) supported by NABARD, SFAC and the Government of India.
