GST registration is optional for you. You are under the ₹40 lakh threshold — registration is voluntary. Many businesses still register voluntarily to claim input tax credit and to sell to GST-registered buyers.

Late filing costs ₹50 a day (₹20 for a nil return), capped at ₹5,000 per return, plus 18% annual interest on unpaid tax. Filing on time is the cheapest thing you can do.
Is there a government fee for GST registration?
No. The GST department charges nothing to register. The only unavoidable outside cost is a Digital Signature Certificate, and even that is only needed for companies, LLPs and partnerships — a proprietor can verify with an Aadhaar OTP.
When does GST registration become mandatory?
Above ₹40 lakh turnover for goods or ₹20 lakh for services. It becomes compulsory from the first rupee if you supply inter-state or sell through an e-commerce platform, whatever your turnover.
Should I register voluntarily?
Often yes. Voluntary registration lets you claim input tax credit on purchases, and most GST-registered buyers prefer suppliers who can give them a tax invoice.
