MSME Registration Benefits Every Small Business Should Know
Free, fast, and more consequential than most founders realise — including the payment-protection rule.
MSME (Udyam) registration is one of the few genuinely free, same-day government registrations available to Indian businesses — and its benefits go well beyond the collateral-free-loan headline most people know about.
Classification
- Micro — investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore
- Small — investment up to ₹25 crore and turnover up to ₹100 crore
- Medium — investment up to ₹125 crore and turnover up to ₹500 crore
The Benefit Most Businesses Miss
Buyers of goods or services from a registered Micro or Small Enterprise must pay within the agreed period, or 45 days if there's no written agreement — and delayed payment automatically accrues compound interest at three times the RBI's notified bank rate. This is enforced through Section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act, which disallows the buyer's expense deduction for late payments. In practice, this has made larger buyers noticeably more careful about paying small vendors on time.
Other Concrete Benefits
- Priority sector lending status with banks, often at lower interest rates
- Reduced trademark filing fee (₹4,500 vs ₹9,000 per class for others)
- Reservation and price preference in specific government tenders
- Protection against delayed payments with statutory interest, as above
- Eligibility for various state and central subsidy schemes
Registration is done entirely online via self-declaration on the Udyam portal, using your Aadhaar and PAN — no documents need to be uploaded, and the certificate is generated immediately.
